FAECARE Foundation Builds Capacity of Persons with Disabilities in Etche LGA through Disability Rights Training
In a significant step towards promoting disability rights and inclusion, FAECARE Foundation has successfully conducted a one-day disability rights and advocacy training for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Etche Local Government Area, Rivers State. The training, held at Aleto Town Hall, was part of the organization’s ongoing Disability Rights Initiative Project: Rural Rivers, supported by the Disability Rights Fund.
The training brought together 22 participants, including PWDs, peer mentors, and project team members, with the aim of increasing awareness and knowledge of disability rights, improving advocacy competence, and empowering PWDs to influence inclusive policies at the grassroots level. Participants gained a deeper understanding of disability rights, including accessibility, education, health, employment, and protection from discriminatory language.
Through interactive sessions and group discussions, participants were encouraged to identify and challenge discriminatory practices and language. One participant noted that the training was an “eye-opening” experience that helped her realize her rights as a woman with disability. The participants expressed appreciation for the training and committed to taking the knowledge gained into their communities through planned advocacy visits and awareness campaigns.
FAECARE Foundation remains committed to empowering PWDs and promoting inclusive policies in Rivers State. The organization plans to replicate this training in more local government areas in the state, further solidifying its dedication to disability rights and inclusion.
