Disability Rights Initative Project

RURAL RIVERs Training Empowers Persons with Disabilities in Eleme LGAFAECARE Foundation successfully conducted a one-day disability rights and advocacy training for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State, as part of its ongoing Disability Rights Initiative Project: Rural Rivers. The training, held at Aleto Town Hall, brought together 24 participants, including person with disabilities from Eleme, peer mentors, volunteers, and project team members.

The training aimed to increase awareness and knowledge of disability rights, improve advocacy competence, and empower Persons with Disabilities in rural and suburban communities to raise disability awareness engage in disability rights-based dialogue and influence inclusive policies at the grassroots level.Participants gained a deeper understanding of disability rights, like accessibility, education, health, employment, and protection from discriminatory language.Interactive sessions and group discussions encouraged participants to identify and challenge discriminatory practices and language. Participants expressed appreciation for the training, with one participant noting that it was an “eye-opening” experience that helped her realize her rights as a woman with disability.

The training concluded with a commitment from participants to take the knowledge gained into their communities through planned advocacy visits and awareness campaigns. FAECARE Foundation remains committed to empowering PWDs and promoting inclusive policies in Rivers State and will replicate this training in nine more local government areas in Rivers State.FAECARE Foundation is a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities and vulnerable groups.
